Alexander Waltner is an Austrian self taught painter who started expressing himself through color in the 90'. To discover the man behind the art, i asked him a few questions.

Q: How would you describe your style?

A: I assume i have a no-style style. It's a quasi-reality. If I move forward gently in my canon, I also move away from it.

Q: When you feel inspired, do you wait until you are able to paint or do you draw some sketches/take notes?

A: The painting and the drawings work together but at the same time independently. Sometimes I start painting and sometimes the drawing is the base for the image. The more simplified a figure is, the more likely it is to need a drawing. For pictures with many figures, i create the base directly on the canvas.

Q: You remarked how much you like Jean Dubuffet. Could you tell me more about it?

A: Jean Dubuffet was considered more intellectual in his time and elevated the concept of imperfection to art .This ability has inspired me to give my characters free exposure. Jean Dubuffet was very important to me 20 years ago and can become so again. His positioning of the figures and his color is excellent.

Q: People usually like to understand paintings, to search for a meaning. Do you wish your art to be understood or to just be visually enjoyed?

A: In order to understand my art it takes a certain development of the heart that comes from life itself.

One can just perceive the figures and colors. But one can also develop further and give what is seen as a "meaning" from the viewer's point. It is most beautiful when you see and feel.

Q: What kind of paint do you use on your artworks? Are you worried about your paintings' conservation over time?

A: I only use Lascaux acrylic paints and fully trust the quality of these paints.

Q: Which is your favorite painting you have ever done and why?

A: In my 30 years as an artist there are some favorites that I have painted. I don't want to limit myself to one thing. In this sense my whole work is the best that i have made. Through devotion, playfulness, madness, seriousness and consistency.
